Senses Fail West Hollywood Concert reviews
Counting Crows brings back the Band!
The Senses Fail opened with the The Band's "Caravan" with their entire traveling ensemble plus two other guest bands, bringing us a show to remember! This show was a wonderful example of musicians at play. As always, Adam Duritz brought a command of stage presence with his sure voice and earnest approach, reliving each song as if telling us a story. They often brought the bands together for that classic Band feel that evokes the senses with a big sound in a comfortable setting with a coffeehouse-like atmosphere. They highlighted covers including "Delta Woman" by Joe Cocker, "Just Like a Woman" by Bob Dylan, and an homage to the area with "Sweet Virginia" by the Rolling Stones.
Rapper NOTAR and his band brought an energy to the stage that added to the circus feelings of amazed "Wows" from the audience. Augustana brought a sound of their own to the evening, with lead singer Dan Layus setting pace with his voice that carried the melodies like a gusty breeze on the bay with an assured punch that added a hint of salt in the air with "Stars and Boulevards", "Sweet and Low", and their pensive "Boston" with Layus on the piano. We had hoped to hear a little more of the Senses Fail originals, such as "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" and "Round Here" which would have sent us over the moon. However, with such a collaborative ensemble and an uplifting reminder of our American freedoms, bringing "This Land is Your Land" and "With a Little Help From My Friends" to the mix, this summer concert was inviting and enjoyable from start to finish.
